US Counties with Cannabis Dispensaries Show Fewer Opioid Deaths

This is the first study to confirm the relationship between cannabis dispensaries and opioid-related deaths. The study shows that counties with plenty of cannabis dispensaries had reduced opioid-related deaths. 

Opioids are also known as narcotics. They are drugs prescribed by medical professionals to treat persistent and chronic pain. Depending on the pain which can be moderate or severe, you get a specific prescription. 

Most commonly prescribed opioids include illegal heroin, fentanyl, morphine, and oxycodone.

A recent search shows that most people in the US are abusing opioid prescriptions and dying of an overdose. 

Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic narcotic that is illegally obtained through the black market. This drug is used in combating cancer pain but abused by those in need of pain management. 

The connection between opioid misuse reduction and cannabis use

The study done by researchers shows there was a reduction in opioid-related deaths in countries that have more cannabis dispensaries. Although the study was much more observational, the reduction in deaths shows promising results.

What we know about marijuana and opioid abuse

A recent study suggests that marijuana can assist reduce dependency and addiction to opioids. The research was based on collecting data from various patients in Canadian clinics. There are promising results of cannabis improving patients’ quality of life and their health.
